My ART journey
My interest in art therapy could be credited to the disruptive 'Just Stop Oil' activists. During my visit to London in 2022, I visited the National Gallery to check out Van Gogh's paintings to try and understand why throwing paint on his work caused such vast media outrage. Beside the Sunflowers painting, which was the victim of these 'activists', was the painting Wheat Field with Cypresses. Something about the painting was mesmerising; the brushstrokes were so vivid, the colours so vibrant, creating a sense of movement and energy that was both captivating and unsettling. Intrigued by this painting, I started reading up on the life of Vincent Van Gogh. Van Gogh suffered from various mental illnesses, including depression, anxiety, and possibly bipolar disorder. Wheat Field with Cypresses was painted while he was at Saint-Paul-de-Mausole mental asylum in France, where he was voluntarily a patient from May 1889 to May 1890. This work was inspired by the view from the window in the asylum towards the Alpilles mountains. The Starry Night was also painted during his stay here. These artworks raised a few intriguing questions: how much did Vincent Van Gogh's mental health influence his art? Was his art a product of hallucinations? Was his paintings just an expression of his emotional state, or was it a coping mechanism? These questions will remain unanswered, but Vincent van Gogh has gotten mythologized in popular imagination as the quintessential tortured artist. Thus began my foray into art therapy and the relationship between mental health and creativity. I discovered that many artists used their art to process and cope with their mental health struggles and that art therapy can be a powerful tool for individuals seeking to improve their mental well-being.
